*Lee Mavers turns 49. He is the guitarist and vocalist for the now defunct English band, The La's. You may think you don't know that band, but I bet you do. Just listen to this track.

*The #1 single today in 1986 was "Glory of Love" by Peter Cetera from the Karate Kid II soundtrack. Man, I remember that summer and how popular that movie was and I loved this song. Kyle Jones, a guitarist, had the clever idea of recording himself playing guitar from inside his guitar. He didn't expect to see the guitar strings turn into wacky, wavy and shapely lines. It's crazy. And it's thanks to the iPhone.

Like when the iPhone's camera captured floating blades of an airplane propeller, these crazy shapes that the guitar string seemingly takes on is caused by the rolling shutter effect of the iPhone's camera (when digital camera's take a picture they actually scan over a frame either vertically or horizontally. Basically, not all parts of an image are recorded at exactly same time and some parts are left playing catch up.)

River Riot 2010 - Review

It's been a few weeks but I would like to say that I really enjoyed River Riot this year. It wasn't as hot as it had been in weeks prior, but it was hot enough. Sheesh!

I went with my girl Audrey Kay to the festivities. We arrived just prior to Paper Tongues taking the stage. What a fun band they are. They did great and you could tell they were in such good spirits and completely loving what they were doing. I really liked their song "Ride to California". This usually isn't my cup-o-tea musically, but it got me groovin'.

We were melting and found solace in some shade while Spose and Flobots played. We were chatting it up, so I quite honestly didn't pay attention to their sets.

Emphatic performed around 4:45pm. Their set consisted mostly of new material that will be coming out on their first major label record due to be released this fall. I have to say that it was really weird to see the new members of the band on stage for the first time (on drums and rhythm guitar). The Emphatic members have all been good acquaintances of mine for some time now, so this feeling is to be expected. For me, this will take some getting used to. The new guys held their own, but it was just...well...weird. That said, it was a great set and seeing as they had the longest line ever for fans to meet them -- it's safe to say they came and conquered.

We wandered around during Cage the Elephant and watched a bit of Blue October.

THEN IT WAS WEEZER TIME!

I have been a fan of this band since high school. I remember having MTV on and watching the "Undone - The Sweater Song" and "Buddy Holly" videos (when MTV actually played music videos). I have continued to love the material they have released, so I was really looking forward to seeing them perform.

Right before taking the stage Rivers Cuomo climbed one of the biggest ladders I have ever seen to add an 'S' to the 89.7 The River banner that hung stage left.

Once on stage, the energy did not stop until their set was finished. It was one of the most fun experiences I have had at a live show. Rivers brought beach balls for us to toss around in the crowd and proceeded to bring two interesting fellows from the crowd on stage. One in a head-to-toe (face included) blue lycra suit and another in a chicken suit. Too funny!

The band took us through their catalog of hits including: "Hash Pipe," "Say It Ain't So," "Island in the Sun," "Beverly Hills," "Buddy Holly," "Undone - The Sweater Song," "Pork and Beans," "My Name is Jonas" and so many, many more. It was a damn blast start-to-finish.

Stone Temple Pilots were next. We had inched our way closer and closer to the front of the stage and had a great spot to watch this set. STP holds a dear place in my 90s alternative music loving heart, so I was pretty stoked to be seeing them. There isn't much to say other than they didn't disappoint. They played great, sounded stellar, had an excellent stage set-up with their massive screen of light bulbs that flashed in sync with the songs. It was also sweet to see Josh Freese (drummer extraordinaire: Weezer, Devo, NIN, APC, The Vandals) come out and take over the drums for a song. Just simply excellent.

I was a bit wilted towards the end. It had been a long day. Audrey and I exited the hot and sweaty crowd about 2/3 into the set to enjoy the rest of their performance as well as what became a cool night with a beautiful breeze.

We took off on our merry little way right before the encore to beat the traffic rush.

Catching Up: Korn, Deaf Peds, Flyleaf, Egypt Central

I've been completely slacking on the updating for this blog. Sometimes one just has to take a break. A mini-holiday. A respite. The only problem with doing so is I never got around to reviewing all the amazing shows I have attended over the last month and some change. Boo. Right? So, with that said, I am just going to briefly touch upon each show and hope that I am able to get back on this blogging horse from this point on.

KORN - Always liked KORN. Never thought I would see KORN. Thanks to a payback from a friend I was able to attend. They put on an awesome performance. I love that each member has their own unique stage presence. Energy was on high the whole time. An even bigger bonus was being able to meet the band thanks to the generosity of an acquaintance of mine, Alan Usher. Albeit it was a brief encounter with each member (enough to sign items you had with you), I was grateful to have the opportunity. I was able to tell Jonathan Davis how much of a fan I was of his work on the "Queen of the Damned" movie/soundtrack. He responded with a humble "Thank You." Then proceeded to remark how that project was an absolute blast to do. Awesome indeed.

Deaf Pedestrians - These mens from Texas made the trek back north to where they are extremely loved to play another energy packed show for us. This band entertains for sure. Full stop. It is an added bonus that they are all personable and intelligent humans that are enjoyable to interact with on a social level. The following video is from a gig they did in Kearney some time ago. Check their stuff out and see them live if you ever get the chance. Worth it. Totally worth it.

Flyleaf/10 Years/Fair to Midland - I made the journey to Omaha once again to Sokol for this show. This was the umpteenth time I saw Flyleaf and my first for the other two bands. Flyleaf's set was solid per usual. I never tire of watching Pat go absolutely batty on stage while strumming that bass of his. I have to say I am never disappointed with Flyleaf. 10 Years had a great set as well. But, but, but --- Fair to Midland stole the show for me. I have just in the past few years started enjoying their music, but their-set-at-this-show-was-phenomenal. Totally sealed the deal for me. Now I am a huge fan. The lead singer has an amazing vocal range. And the energy. Ahhh! The ENERGY! They are, in short, amazing. Enjoy some of the awesomeness by watching the following videos.

Egypt Central/Section 8 - These bands performed a series of shows through Nebraska and I was able to catch both the Kearney and Grand Island gigs. Kearney on Friday, June 11th was a completely rockin' show. I have had the pleasure of seeing both bands before on several separate occasions and have enjoyed each of them every time. This time followed the same formula. Loved it. The show Saturday in Grand Island had an embarrassing turn-out, but you wouldn't be able to tell that by the each bands performance. Egypt Central brought the house down as if there were 500 people in the room. A fact I find admirable. Both bands are stellar groups of gentlemen and are a damn blast to hang out with. Fun times indeed.

Side Note: Grand Island, you complain profusely that there is never any good bands that come to town and when they do, you don't show up to support them. What gives? Seriously. You missed out. Big time.

IN OTHER NEWS:

30 Seconds to Mars debuted a video for "Closer to the Edge" last week. All the footage seen within was captured during the last leg of their Into The Wild tour. A fact that still doesn't sit well with me because in order to obtain this footage, the show I attended was interrupted and it was a total buzz kill for the momentum the show had. The first 1/2 was amazing and then sputterblahhh! But whaddayado? So here is a link so you can watch. It is pretty amazing to see how far the band has come since I started promoting for them in 2002.

I am not a fan of Lady GaGa. I think she is wasting the talent she has on pop crap which is disheartening. Disheartening that she isn't true to what she has been blessed with. Disheartening that if she was she probably wouldn't be as successful as she is now because what she is doing now (Outrageous outfits and sticky pop beats) is what the mass of the population wants. Sad. That said, her visuals are pretty cool. Make-up is always amazing. And her lyrics when taken out of the synth crap context are pretty poignant.

Imagine my surprise this Monday morning when I see Shannon and Tomo talk about their "Bad Romance" cover on the BBC.

Verdict: I LOVE IT!

But I love it because they put their touch on it. This version is ALL 30 Seconds to Mars. Jared's voice. Tomo's guitar. Shannon's drumming. They made the song affecting. One of the many reasons I adore this band intensely.

Drummer Bob Bryar Out Of My Chemical Romance

It feels like deja vu hearing this news. Bob Bryar, drummer, is no longer part of My Chemical Romance.

The band issued this statement on their website:

"As of 4 weeks ago, My Chemical Romance and Bob Bryar parted ways. This was a painful decision for all of us to make and was not taken lightly. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors and expect you all to do the same."

BOOOOO!!!!!

I first met Bob while he was doing sound for The Used on Warped Tour in 2003 and he was one of the coolest blokes. When MCR "parted ways" with their first drummer (Matt Pelissier) and hired Bob I was incredibly stoked for him. Despite not having played drums since his jazz and marching band days in high school, he got right back in the saddle and did amazing. Which to me is the mark of an incredible talent.

I am sure with his background in sound, engineering and drumming he will land on his feet and go on to do even more awesome things.

Jane's Addiction bassist Eric Avery has quit the band -- and the alt-rock mainstays have already announced the hired gun set to fill his shoes: former Guns N' Roses low-ender Duff McKagan.

Avery, who co-founded Jane's in 1985 and rejoined the band in 2008 for their first reunion since splitting in 1991, announced his departure via Twitter early Monday morning after the quartet wrapped their world tour in Australia.

"That's it," he wrote. "With equal parts regret and relief, the Jane's Addiction experiment is at an end."
